Tesla and Rivian: the two names that dominate the conversation when it comes to electric vehicles (EVs). As a person who has tracked the EV space for years, both companies are stretching the limits of the possible. But how do they compare with one another? The Legacy of Tesla
Tesla is the unequivocal godfather of the EV revolution. I recall when the Tesla Model S was first driving on the roads—it seemed like a vision of the future. With stylish exteriors, revolutionary tech and a Supercharger network that makes road-tripping easy, Tesla has defined the new electric car.
From the budget Model 3 to the high-end Model X, their offerings appeal to a broad array of drivers. And don’t forget Autopilot, Tesla’s advanced driver-assistance system, which has been transformational for many. But although Tesla has a jump on everyone, it’s not the only game in town anymore.
Rivian: The New Challenger
Enter Rivian, the newcomer shaking things up with rugged, adventure-ready EVs. If Tesla is the slick urban visionary, Rivian is the off-roading fanatic’s fantasy. The R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV that they offer are for those who want to go into the great outdoors without sacrificing sustainability.
What impresses me most about Rivian is their emphasis on ruggedness and multi-functionality. The R1T, for instance, includes a built-in camp stove and a gear tunnel for outdoor enthusiasts. Clearly, Rivian is going after a different crowd than Tesla, and they are doing a fine job of it.
Performance and Range
In terms of performance, both companies deliver. The Tesla’s Model S Plaid will hit 60 mph in less than 2 seconds — yes, you read that correctly. Rivian’s other official entry, the R1T, offers strong off-road capabilities and a maximum towing capacity of 11,000 pounds.
In range, Tesla continues to have the lead. The Model S Long Range can go up to 405 miles on a charge, about 91 miles further than Rivian’s R1T caps at. But Rivian’s vehicles are designed for tougher terrain, so a slightly lower range is expected.
Charging Infrastructure
This is where Tesla excels. Their Supercharger network is second to none, with thousands of charging stations around the globe. If you’re taking a road trip, there is perhaps no more convenient car to use than a Tesla with its charging infrastructure.
Rivian is developing a proprietary charging station network called the Rivian Adventure Network, but it’s still sort of in its infancy. For now, Rivian owners will lean on third-party chargers, which can be hit or miss depending on where you are.
Price and Availability
